THINKING BACK
Purpose: To consider the possibility that a particular difficult person is doing to you what you once did to someone else
If God wants us to learn how our behaviors affect others, what better way than to have someone do to us what we once did to someone else!
The process works best, of course, if one makes the connection between the present and the past. The purpose of this exercise is to help you do that.
Some years ago I was dating a woman who constantly criticized me. True to my own philosophy, I honestly asked myself if I ever did the same, and I was able to say at the time that I hadn’t. At least until I found myself on the phone one day with my younger brother, criticizing his latest interest, using the same tone and attitude as the woman I was dating. I had been doing so for years without ever realizing it, and since I did it to only my brother, I wasn’t able to see the connection right away between my girlfriend’s behavior and my own.
So even though this exercise is very simple, it might take some time to come to fruition.
Think back and try to remember a time when you treated someone else the way you are being treated now. If no one comes to mind, it could mean that the Universe has sent the person to you for a different reason. Or it could mean that you haven’t yet made the connection.
Meditation, prayer, and dreams can all help in making the connection. More will be said about these approaches in the next chapter.
If there is a connection to be made, you will know when you’ve made it—you will have a moment of recognition and insight that is unmistakable. Be patient in waiting for that moment to come.
